Friday marked the beginning of the first series of the second half between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. It also was the return of Boston Designated Hitter David Ortiz, who went 1 for 4. In the first of a three game set in Boston, Yankees’ SP Joba Chamberlain put together the best start of his career, out dueling Red Sox SP Josh Beckett in a 1-0 Yankees’ victory. Chamberlain was outstanding, allowing only three hits and one walk while striking out nine in seven shutout innings.

In one of the biggest starts of his young career Chamberlain came up big, marking a career high in innings pitched and matching his career high for strikeouts. He also solicited some additional attention throwing up and in against Boston’s Kevin Youkilis, a scene becoming more and more common in their matchups. Joba’s season era is down to 2.30.

Beckett was the tough luck loser, going seven innings and allowing only one run on an infield single. CP Mariano Rivera was excellent as usual, going 1 2/3 innings with three strikeouts. Andy Pettite goes against Tim Wakefield today.

The Giants try to show some life after a 10-2 blowout Friday night. Tim Lincecum goes against Brandon Webb in a matchup of perhaps the two best pitchers in the National League.
