Willis’ Troubles Started in World Baseball Classic

Dontrelle Willis finished the 2005 season as one of the top three pitchers in the major leagues. His 22 wins led the Major Leagues and he sported a fine 2.63 era. He had a 1.13 WHIP and a 170-55 strikeout to walk ratio.

After being punished for an 0-2 record in the WBC, he has gone 22-29 with a  4.75 era. His walk rate and WHIP have gotten higher and higher culminating in a 9.38 MLB era and a demotion to the minor leagues.

A new season coming off a year in which he threw less than 100 innings combined could be what Willis needs to resurrect his career. Don’t expect to see him pitch in the WBC again though.
