Spring Training Position Battles - Giants Fifth Starter

With Cy Lincecum at the head of the rotation, San Francisco has a tough choice ahead. Behind Lincecum is Matt Cain, Randy Johnson and Barry Zito. Those four are locks. Jonathan Sanchez and Noah Lowry are two lefties who have both shown flashes of brilliance. Sanchez struck out nearly a batter per inning last year while Lowry was a fourteen game winner in 2007.

Expect Sanchez to get the longer look as he would have more trade value in a midseason trade. American League teams wouldn’t have much interest in the soft throwing Lowry but Sanchez, who can throw in the low to mid 90’s, would be an alluring target if he can get off to a hot start.
