2009 St. Louis Cardinals Top Five Prospects List

1. Brett Wallace - A - ETA 2010 - Comp - Lefthanded Ryan Braun-like production
2. Colby Rasmus - A- - ETA 2009 - Comp - Grady Sizemore
3. Daryl Jones - C+ - ETA 2010 - Comp - Marlon Byrd
4. Jess Todd - RHP - B - ETA 2009 - Comp - Sidney Ponson
5. Chris Perez/Jason Motte - RHP - B - ETA 2009 - Comp - Jon Broxton

Wallace has hit everything thrown his direction since high school. The powerful third baseman won back to back Pac-10 player of the year awards while leading the nation in several hitting categories. His power is for real and he should be the type of major leaguer who provides a high batting average to go with middle of the order power, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him bring the type of offense of a Ryan Braun with perhaps less power but better average. He has an outstanding approach and superstar plate discipline.

Rasmus was bitten by the injury bug after just narrowly missing the big league club in spring training in 08, he’s expected to contend for rookie of the year honors in 09 and has the ceiling of a Grady Sizemore. Jones is a short player who brings some speed and hitting ability to the outfield. He could easily be trade bait or the reason for Ryan Ludwick or Rick Ankiel to be moved at some point. Todd is a young starter who had success in 08 while Perez and Motte are powerful righthanded relievers who should battle for closing roles on the big league club in 09.

2005 MLB Draft Mulligan 26-30

Original Picks
26 Craig Hansen Boston Red Sox
27 Joey Devine Atlanta Braves
28 Colby Rasmus St. Louis Cardinals
29 Jacob Marceaux Florida Marlins
30 Tyler Greene St. Louis Cardinals

New Picks
26 Boston Red Sox - Joey Devine, RHP - ERA star for Oakland last year would be an awesome addition to the Red Sox relief core.
27 Atlanta Braves - Chase Headley, OF - Solid bat is the type of guy who could bring consistency to an inconsistent outfield.
28 St. Louis Cardinals - Micah Owings, RHP/Raker - Owings would be a solid back end starter as well as a potent #8 hitter for Tony LaRussa.
29 Florida Marlins - Steven Pearce 1B - He’s ready for the big leagues and should drive in runs while making outs in a Florida RBI man type of way.
30 St. Louis Cardinals - Clayton Richard, LHP - Went 12-6 with a 2.47 ERA in the minors last year before a rough run in the big leagues.

2006 MLB Draft Mulligan Picks 26-30

Bard’s powerful right arm keeps him in the first round in our do-over.

Original Order:
26 Bryan Morris Los Angeles Dodgers
27 Jason Place Boston Red Sox
28 Daniel Bard Boston Red Sox
29 Kyle McCulloch Chicago White Sox
30 Adam Ottavino St. Louis Cardinals

Original Order:
26 Los Angeles Dodgers - Chris Marrero, OF - Slugger hasn’t had the greatest success, but is still young enough to develop.
27 Boston Red Sox - Wes Hodges, 3B - He went to the Indians but could be a solid 3B prospect for Boston, who is shallow at the position in their farm system.
28 Boston Red Sox - Chris Coghlan, 2B - Another strong infield bat would give Boston just another MLB ready bat with nowhere to put him in 2009.
29 Chicago White Sox - Daniel Bard, RHP - Flamethrower rediscovered himself as a reliever in 2008. He could make an impact in the major league bullpen in 2009.
30 St. Louis Cardinals - Manny Burriss, SS - Young speedster held his own at the plate with San Francisco, Cardinals don’t have much infield depth and he would be able to play a utility role in 09 and replace Khalil in 2010.
